The One Street in Naples You Must Avoid After 10 PM

Published on

If you are visiting Naples, the most crucial area to avoid walking through after 10 PM is the immediate vicinity surrounding Piazza Garibaldi, specifically the dark side streets like Corso Garibaldi and the narrow alleys branching into the Forcella neighborhood. While the main plaza has police and military presence, the unlit streets radiating from the central train station become hotspots for petty crime, aggressive scammers, and erratic traffic after dark.

Naples Travel Guide

Why Piazza Garibaldi and Forcella Are Risky at Night

Transient populations, high rates of petty theft, and lack of adequate street lighting make the streets branching off Piazza Garibaldi uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for tourists carrying luggage.

During my first visit to Naples, my train arrived at 11:00 PM. Trying to save €15, I decided to walk to my accommodation near the historic center via Corso Garibaldi. It was a mistake. I immediately felt the shift in atmosphere. The vibrant, chaotic charm of Naples was replaced by poorly lit sidewalks, unauthorized parking attendants, and groups lingering outside closed storefronts. It is a highly transient area where opportunistic pickpockets specifically target tired, distracted travelers.

What Actually Happens on These Streets After Dark?

  • Targeted Pickpocketing: Thieves look for tourists trying to navigate Google Maps while carrying all their luggage.
  • Bag Snatching: Motorbikes and scooters frequently speed down narrow sidewalks or poorly lit streets, posing a physical danger and a risk of bag-snatching.
  • Unlicensed Services: Aggressive drivers will approach you immediately outside the station, demanding exorbitant rates for unofficial transport.

Is Naples Safe? A Realistic Look at City Crime

Yes, Naples is generally safe for tourists who practice basic street smarts. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare; the main threat is opportunistic petty theft.

Compared to other major European hubs, Naples gets an unfairly bad reputation due to its gritty aesthetic and history of organized crime. However, the gang-related violence you might read about does not target or impact everyday tourists.

Essential Tips: How to Arrive in Naples at Night Safely

Book a licensed taxi directly from the official stand, keep valuables hidden, and confirm the fare before getting in.

How to Arrive in Naples at Night Safely

If your train or flight arrives late, do not panic. You just need a solid transit plan.

  1. Ignore the Hustlers: Do not engage with anyone offering a “cheap ride” inside the station terminal or directly outside the doors.
  2. Use the Official Taxi Rank: Walk straight to the designated queue. Taxis in Naples offer a fixed flat rate from the airport or train station to the city center (usually around €21 from the airport). Always verify this and ensure you have cash before the car moves.
  3. Conceal Your Valuables: Keep your passport, wallet, and phone tucked securely under an inner jacket layer or in a discreet cross-body bag.
  4. Walk with Purpose: If you absolutely must walk a short distance, walk fast, stick to well-lit main avenues, avoid looking down at your phone constantly, and walk on the sidewalk close to the buildings to avoid erratic scooters.
