Updated American Airlines Baggage Rules, Fees & Dimensions

    Published on

For 2026, American Airlines (AA) allows one free carry-on and one personal item for all passengers. For domestic flights, the first checked bag is $35 (online) or $40 (at airport). Standard bags must weigh under 50 lbs (23 kg) and measure within 62 linear inches. Premium cabin travelers and elite members enjoy higher limits, often up to 70 lbs and 2–3 free bags.

Carry-On Rules: What Fits in the Bin?

Every passenger, including those on Basic Economy tickets, is entitled to one carry-on bag and one personal item.

    • Carry-on Dimensions: Must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm). This includes wheels and handles.
    • Personal Item: Must fit under the seat in front of you, with max dimensions of 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm).
    • Pro Tip: If you’re in Group 9 (Basic Economy), overhead space fills up fast. Be prepared to “gate check” your bag for free if the bins are full.

    Checked Bag Fees for 2026

Fees depend on your destination and how you pay. Paying online at least 24 hours before your flight usually saves you $5 per bag on domestic routes.

    Domestic (U.S., Puerto Rico, USVI)

    Bag OrderOnline PriceAirport Price
    1st Bag$35$40
    2nd Bag$45$45
    3rd Bag$150$150
    4th+ Bag$200$200

    International Routes

    • Transatlantic/Transpacific: 1st bag is often $75 for Basic Economy but FREE for Main Cabin.
    • South America/Mexico: Fees range from $35 to $60 for the first bag depending on the specific region and fare type.

Weight and Size Limits: The “62-Inch” Rule

Standard checked bags must not exceed 62 linear inches (Length + Width + Height).

    Weight Allowances by Cabin:

    • Basic Economy & Main Cabin: 50 lbs (23 kg).
    • Premium Economy: 50 lbs (23 kg).
    • Business & First Class: 70 lbs (32 kg).

Wait! If you have AAdvantage Platinum status or higher, your weight limit is bumped to 70 lbs even when flying in Economy.

    Overweight & Oversized Charges

If your bag is a “heavyweight,” be ready to open your wallet. These fees are per person, each way.

    • 51–53 lbs: $30 surcharge.
    • 53–70 lbs: $100 fee ($200 for Cuba).
    • 71–100 lbs: $200 to $450 (Bags over 70 lbs are not accepted for Europe or Australia).
    • Oversized (62–115 inches): $150–$200 depending on the route.

How to Get Free Checked Bags?

You don’t always have to pay. Here are the most reliable “shortcuts” to zero fees:

    • Credit Cards: The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® card gives you and up to 4 companions a free first bag on domestic flights.
    • Elite Status: AAdvantage Gold gets 1 free bag; Executive Platinum gets 3.
    • Military: Active U.S. military on orders can check up to 5 bags (up to 100 lbs each) for free.
    • Premium Cabins: If you’re flying Business or First, your first 2–3 bags are always complimentary.

    Common Traveler Queries

Does American Airlines Basic Economy include a carry-on?

Yes, since 2024, AA allows one carry-on and one personal item for Basic Economy.

How much is a second bag on American Airlines?

For domestic flights, the second bag is $45.

What is the weight limit for AA international flights?

Usually 50 lbs for Economy and 70 lbs for Business/First.

Can I pay for my bags at the gate?

Yes, but it’s more expensive. It’s better to pay online during check-in.

Are strollers free on American Airlines?

Yes, one stroller and one car seat can be checked at the gate or ticket counter for free.

Does AA charge for golf clubs?

They count as a standard checked bag if they are under 50 lbs.

What happens if my carry-on is too big?

You will be required to check it at the gate, and standard checked bag fees may apply.

How many bags can I check on American Airlines?

Up to 10 bags on domestic/transatlantic flights; up to 5 for Mexico/South America.

Is the first bag free for AAdvantage members?

Only if you have Gold status or higher, or an eligible credit card.

What is the “linear inch” measurement?

    It is the sum of Length + Width + Height (e.g., 30″ + 20″ + 12″ = 62″).

Can I combine the weight of two bags?

No. American Airlines uses a “piece concept.” If you have two bags, they are charged individually. You cannot have one 60-lb bag and one 40-lb bag to average 50 lbs; the 60-lb bag will trigger an overweight fee.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

Currently, American Airlines does not have a published weight limit for carry-on luggage, as long as you can lift the bag into the overhead bin unassisted.

Does AA offer a discount for paying baggage fees early?

Yes. You save $5 on your first checked bag for domestic flights if you pay on the AA website or app before arriving at the airport.

Are musical instruments allowed as carry-ons?

Small instruments (violins, guitars) are allowed if they fit in the overhead bin at the time of boarding. Large instruments like cellos may require a purchased seat.
