Qantas Money Platinum Credit Card Benefits, Costs and Hidden Catch Points

Published on

The Qantas Money Premier Platinum Card is best for Australian-based Qantas flyers who can use the lounge passes, companion fare discount, travel insurance and points without paying interest. It is not a smart pick for people who carry a balance, rarely fly Qantas, or only want the biggest sign-up bonus.

Qantas Premier Platinum Card

The card is now listed by Qantas Money as the Qantas Money Platinum Credit Card, but many travellers still search for it as the Qantas Premier Platinum Card. Current official card details show a $349 first-year annual fee, then $399 per year, plus an offer of up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points when the spend and eligibility rules are met.

Is the Qantas Premier Platinum Card worth it in 2026?

Yes, the card can be worth it if you fly Qantas at least once or twice a year and repay the full balance every month. The value is not in one single perk. It comes from stacking several small benefits: points, lounge invitations, travel insurance and a once-per-year companion fare discount.

Here is the simple test I would use before applying:

QuestionWhy it matters
Do you fly Qantas or QantasLink yearly? The best travel benefits are tied to Qantas use.
Can you spend $5,000 in 90 days naturally? This is needed for the main bonus points offer.
Will you use two lounge invitations?Unused lounge passes are worth nothing.
Do you repay in full?Interest can wipe out the rewards quickly.
Do you travel with a partner, family or friend? The companion fare discount becomes more useful.

What are the main Qantas Money Platinum Credit Card benefits?

The strongest benefits are the points earn rate, two lounge invitations and the companion fare discount. Qantas Money lists the earn rate as 1 Qantas Point per AU$1 on domestic spend up to AU$10,000 per statement period, then 0.5 points per AU$1 above that, plus 1.5 points per AU$1 on international spend and an extra point on eligible Qantas spend.

The card also includes two single-entry Complimentary Lounge Invitations each anniversary year for eligible Qantas Club Domestic or Qantas-operated International Business Lounges, excluding the Los Angeles Tom Bradley Terminal International Business Lounge.

The companion fare benefit can offer up to 20% off selected domestic flights for the primary cardholder and up to eight others, once per anniversary year, when booked through the Qantas Money credit card account portal and paid with the card.

Who benefits most from the Qantas Money Premier Platinum Card?

The biggest winner is the regular domestic Qantas traveller who books family or couple trips. Think of someone in Brisbane flying to Sydney or Melbourne a few times a year. The lounge passes make the airport easier, the companion discount can help on a family booking, and the everyday spend builds points without needing extra travel.

A realistic example: a household putting AU$3,000 a month of normal eligible spend on the card could earn around 36,000 Qantas Points a year from domestic spend before bonus offers. That is not a luxury-trip miracle, but it can meaningfully reduce the cost of future domestic travel when reward seats are available.

Who should avoid the Qantas Money Platinum Credit Card?

Avoid this card if you usually carry credit card debt. Australia’s MoneySmart warns that rewards cards can cost more, especially when the full balance is not paid each month, and says travellers should compare the value of points and perks against higher fees and rates.

This card is also a poor fit if:

  • You fly whichever airline is cheapest and rarely choose Qantas.
  • You travel alone and cannot use the companion discount well.
  • You already get lounge access through Qantas Gold, Platinum, Qantas Club or another premium card.
  • You spend heavily overseas and would be better with a no-foreign-transaction-fee card.
  • You want simple cashback instead of managing reward-seat availability.

How do the lounge invitations really work?

You must link lounge invitations before you fly, and they are single-visit passes. Qantas says Complimentary Lounge Invitations can be used for eligible Qantas-operated lounges before a flight with a Qantas, Jetstar or eligible flight number, and they can also be gifted to another Qantas Frequent Flyer member.

A practical mistake: do not leave lounge linking until you reach the airport. Qantas advises allowing up to 14 days for invitations to become available and linking them at least 24 hours before departure.

Best use: save the passes for peak travel days, late-night departures, school-holiday airport crowds, or longer waits after a domestic connection. Do not waste them on a quiet 45-minute regional stop.

Does the travel insurance make the card better?

The travel insurance can add real value, but only if your trip meets the eligibility rules. Qantas Money says the Platinum card includes complimentary travel insurance with cover areas such as overseas medical emergency expenses, cancellations, baggage and delays, subject to terms, conditions and exclusions.

Before relying on it, check:

  1. Whether your trip is domestic or international.
  2. Whether you paid the required travel costs with the card.
  3. Whether pre-existing conditions, adventure activities or trip length affect cover.
  4. Whether your spouse or dependants are covered.
  5. Whether a standalone policy offers better protection for your exact trip.

This is where many travellers get caught. The card benefit is useful, but it is not a blank cheque for every journey.

What is the smart way to use the bonus points?

Use the bonus only if the required spend is already part of your normal budget. The current offer requires AU$5,000 or more in eligible purchases within 90 days for 80,000 bonus Qantas Points, with an additional 40,000 points available for eligible cardholders who have not earned Qantas Points from a credit or charge card into their Qantas Frequent Flyer account in the previous 24 months.

Smart ways to reach the spend safely:

  • Pay annual insurance premiums already due.
  • Move groceries, fuel, phone bills and subscriptions onto the card.
  • Use it for planned travel bookings.
  • Avoid cash advances, refunds, balance transfers and forced spending.

The bonus is valuable only when it does not create new debt.

Final verdict: who really benefits?

The Qantas Premier Platinum Card benefits disciplined Qantas loyalists, not casual bargain hunters. It works best for people who pay in full, fly Qantas regularly, book domestic trips with others, and know how to use Qantas Points for flights rather than low-value redemptions.

My practical verdict: apply only if you can name your first two lounge-pass trips, your likely companion fare booking, and your plan to meet the bonus spend without buying things you do not need. If you cannot answer those three questions, the annual fee may be easier to save than justify.
