Israir Announces Plans for Direct Scheduled Flights to New York by October

Published on

I tried booking a nonstop flight from Tel Aviv to New York last month for a family wedding. The prices were shockingly high, reaching levels I had never seen before. Because major US airlines suspended their routes due to regional security conflicts, El Al has held a virtual monopoly on the route for nearly a year. That frustrating reality is finally about to change.

Israir

Israir just received the green light to sell tickets for direct flights between Ben Gurion Airport and New York starting this fall. If you fly this route often, this new competition is exactly what your wallet needs. More seats in the sky naturally force ticket prices back down to reality.

When Will Israir Flights to New York Actually Begin?

Israir plans to officially launch its daily nonstop flights to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on October 19, 2026. The airline recently secured formal approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin marketing and selling tickets.

However, there is a small catch you must know before swiping your credit card. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) still needs to issue final operational authorization. Israir executives state they are in continuous contact with US authorities. If the FAA grants early approval, flights might even launch before the target date.

What Aircraft Will Fly the Tel Aviv to JFK Route?

You will not be squeezing into a tiny regional jet for this 11-hour journey across the Atlantic. Israir recently acquired two widebody Airbus A330 aircraft specifically for these long-haul transatlantic routes. These planes previously flew for US Airways and American Airlines before Israir purchased them.

Passengers can choose between economy, premium economy, and business class seats. The airline plans to operate the New York route six times a week. This high frequency offers solid flexibility for business travelers and tourists who need specific travel dates.

How Does This Change the Current Travel Market?

Since late 2023, the aviation market between Israel and the United States has been incredibly tight. American legacy carriers pulled out entirely. This left travelers with very few direct options and severely inflated ticket prices.

Here is a quick summary of the expected nonstop market for Fall 2026:

AirlineCurrent StatusExpected AircraftRoute
El AlCurrently OperatingBoeing 787 / 777TLV to JFK / EWR

What Should You Do if FAA Approval is Delayed?

Booking a flight on an uncertified route carries a slight risk. If the FAA takes longer than expected to approve the final paperwork, your October 19 flight could face sudden cancellation.

Israir has officially promised that if regulatory delays push back the launch, passengers will receive a full cash refund. Alternatively, the airline will transfer your ticket to a different available flight.

I strongly suggest buying a backup refundable ticket on another carrier just in case. You can always cancel the backup once the FAA gives Israir the final stamp of approval. This strategy requires floating a bit of extra cash on your credit card, but it guarantees you will make it to New York for your important meetings or family events.

Essential Tips for Booking Your October Flight

Do not rush blindly into buying the first cheap ticket you see. Protect your money and your schedule by following these practical steps.

  1. Monitor the news closely: Set a Google Alert for “FAA Israir approval” to track the exact moment the airline gets full clearance. This gives you peace of mind before your departure date.
  2. Compare luggage fees: Israir is traditionally a low-cost carrier in the European market. Check if their base transatlantic fare actually includes checked bags, or if you have to pay a massive fee at the counter.
  3. Buy independent travel insurance: Your standard credit card insurance might not cover delays caused by a lack of government regulatory approval. Buy a dedicated policy that specifically covers unpredictable flight cancellations.
  4. Avoid tight connections: If you are planning to connect through JFK to a smaller US city, leave at least four hours between flights. This buffer protects you against minor inaugural flight delays and long customs lines.
  5. Prepare for heavy security: Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport always maintains strict security protocols. Arrive at least three to four hours early for any US-bound flight to ensure a smooth check-in process.
