Peru Officially Launches Phase One of ‘e-SAMI’ Electronic Visa System

Published on

Peru just launched its new electronic visa system on August 24, 2026, but tourists need to wait before celebrating. Phase one of the e-SAMI platform only issues fully digital visas to diplomats and officials. Regular vacationers still face a hybrid system.

Peru Officially Launches Phase One of 'e-SAMI' Electronic Visa System

Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá rolled out the Integrated Migration Administration System (e-SAMI) in Lima. This tool lets travelers upload documents and track applications online. It officially replaces the outdated SAM system across all consulates.

Who Can Actually Get a Peru E-Visa Right Now?

Right now, the system strictly separates regular tourists from government workers. You cannot get a 100 percent digital tourist e-Visa yet.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs restricted the first phase to specific groups. Here is a clear breakdown of who qualifies for a fully electronic visa today:

CategoryE-Visa EligibilityIn-Person Visit Required
DiplomatsFully EligibleNo
Official/Consular StaffFully EligibleNo
Tourists & BusinessNot Eligible yetYes, usually required
Visa-Exempt NationalsNot ApplicableNo visa needed

How Tourists Should Use the e-SAMI Portal

Even though tourists do not get a fully digital visa yet, you might still need to use the new portal. Several Peruvian consulates now force applicants to start the process online.

I have seen travelers get confused and think they are done after clicking submit on the website. In reality, applying through e-SAMI simply starts your paperwork. You will likely still have to book an in-person interview.

Follow these exact steps to apply for a tourist visa:

  1. Create an account: Register your details on the official e-SAMI platform.
  2. Upload clear documents: Scan your passport, hotel bookings, and bank statements.
  3. Wait for consulate instructions: Do not assume you are finished. Check your email daily for an interview request.

Are US, UK, Canadian, and Australian Citizens Affected?

If you hold a passport from the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, this new system does not affect your vacation plans at all. You still do not need a visa for short tourist stays in Peru.

You can completely ignore the e-SAMI system for now. Just book your flight and get your standard entry stamp at the airport in Lima.

The project received heavy support from the Inter-American Development Bank, and their goal is to digitize all borders eventually. Until then, visa-exempt travelers keep their fast-track entry privileges.

Smart Fixes for Consulate Appointments

If the system tells you to visit the consulate in person, do not panic. Consular staff are still learning the new software, so delays are normal right now.

Print physical copies of every document you uploaded to the portal. I always advise bringing a backup folder because a consulate’s digital system might crash during your interview. Handing the officer a paper copy of your hotel booking saves the entire trip.

Show up at least 30 minutes early to your appointment. Keep your answers short and honest, and you will walk out with your visa approved.
