UK Airport eGate Rules Change: Children Can Now Skip Passport Queues

Published on

If you are dreading the massive summer holiday queues at UK border control with restless kids, the Home Office has just announced a massive relief. Starting Wednesday, July 8, 2026, children aged eight and nine are officially allowed to use automated eGates at 13 major UK airports.

UK Airport eGate Rules

Previously restricted to travelers aged 10 and older, this new policy will drastically reduce wait times for families. As someone who has spent hours shifting from foot to foot in the “families with young children” manual passport line at Heathrow, I know exactly how game-changing this is. Here is exactly what you need to know before you fly, including the strict height requirements, which airports are rolling this out, and how to prep your kids for the facial scanners.

What Are the New UK Airport eGate Rules for Children?

The new rule explicitly lowers the eGate minimum age limit from 10 down to eight years old. However, simply being eight years old is not enough to get through.

To successfully pass through the automated border, your child must meet three strict conditions:

  1. Age: They must be exactly 8 or 9 years old (children 10 and over were already permitted).
  2. Height: They must be at least 120cm (3ft 11in) tall. This is a non-negotiable physical requirement because the facial recognition cameras are fixed at a specific angle and cannot scan the face of anyone shorter.
  3. Accompaniment: They must be actively traveling with an adult.

Personal tip: Before you even leave for the airport, measure your child against a wall to ensure they hit the 120cm mark. If they are slightly under, do not attempt the eGate. The scanner will fail, the gate will reject them, and you will be sent to the back of the manual desk queue, wasting far more time than if you had just joined it initially.

Which 13 UK Airports Are Affected by the Rule Change?

The expansion covers over 290 eGates across the United Kingdom and specific European border checkpoints. If you are flying into any of these locations starting July 8, your 8 or 9-year-old can use the automated lanes.

Why Is the Minimum Age Lowering Now?

The Government is rolling this out right now specifically to intercept the summer holiday travel chaos. According to official UK Home Office travel guidance, dropping the age limit will immediately make 1.5 million more children eligible to use the automated system this year alone.

By pulling these 1.5 million travelers out of the manual desk queues, Border Force officers can process the remaining passengers much faster. It effectively speeds up the line for everyone—even those traveling with toddlers under eight who still must use the manual desks.

What to Do (and What Not to Do) When Using eGates With Kids

Using facial recognition technology with children requires a bit of prep. Kids tend to look down or fidget, which causes the camera to fail. To avoid the dreaded “seek assistance” red screen, follow these exact steps as you approach the gate.

What to Do:

  • Remove all accessories in line. Have your child take off their glasses, hats, and headphones while you are still waiting in the queue. The biometric screens need an unobstructed view of their eyes and face.
  • Strip the passport cover. The scanner cannot read the microchip if the passport is encased in a thick leather or plastic sleeve. Take it off before you reach the machine.
  • Show them the footprints. Tell your child to stand exactly on the yellow footprints painted on the floor inside the gate. This perfectly aligns their height with the camera. Tell them to look straight ahead at the green light.

What Not to Do:

  • Do not try to squeeze in together. eGates are strictly one-person-at-a-time. You cannot walk through the gate holding your child’s hand. Let them go first, watch them clear the gate, and then process your own passport immediately after them.
  • Do not use the gates if your passport photo is drastically outdated. If your 8-year-old is traveling on a passport issued when they were an infant, the facial recognition software may struggle to match their current face to their baby photo. In this specific scenario, heading straight to the manual desk is often a safer bet to avoid being locked out.

Can Non-UK Citizens Use the eGates?

Yes. The eGates are not just for British passport holders. If your 8-year-old holds a passport from the EU, the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, or Switzerland, they are fully eligible to use the UK eGates under this new rule.
