Japan Confirms Visa-Free Entry for 74 Countries: Are You on the List?

Published on

If you are planning a trip to Tokyo or Kyoto this year, your biggest travel hurdle might not exist. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially allows citizens from 74 countries and regions to bypass the embassy entirely and enter the country visa-free. You simply land at the airport, present your passport, and receive a “Temporary Visitor” stamp right at the immigration counter.

Japan Visa-Free Entry Requirements

Here is the complete breakdown of who gets in, how long you can stay, and the specific passport rules that catch travelers off guard.

Which 3 African Nations Are on Japan’s Visa-Free List?

A massive source of recent confusion has been the status of African passports regarding Japanese entry. Out of the 54 countries in Africa, Japan currently grants visa-free access to exactly three nations.

If you hold a passport from Mauritius, Tunisia, or Lesotho, you do not need to apply for a tourist visa before boarding your flight.

  • Mauritius: 90 days on arrival.
  • Tunisia: 90 days on arrival.
  • Lesotho: 90 days on arrival (Note: Your passport must be Machine-Readable; older hand-written passports will be rejected).

Citizens of all other African nations—including Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria—must submit a formal visa application at their local Japanese embassy or consulate prior to travel.

How Long Can Visa-Free Tourists Stay in Japan?

Not all visa-exempt countries get the same amount of time to explore. The duration of your “Temporary Visitor” permit is dictated strictly by your nationality.

Here is exactly how the 74 approved countries are categorized by stay limits:

Allowed StayParticipating Countries & Regions
90 DaysUnited States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, all EU member states, Argentina, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Tunisia, Lesotho.
30 DaysBrunei, Qatar (Requires pre-registration of ePassport).
15 DaysThailand, Indonesia (Requires pre-registration of ePassport).

Note: The Temporary Visitor status strictly prohibits any paid work. You are only legally allowed to engage in tourism, visit friends or relatives, attend unpaid conferences, or conduct short-term business meetings.

The Hidden Catch: ePassport Requirements

Simply holding a passport from an exempt country does not guarantee entry. Japan’s automated border control systems require digital verification for several specific nationalities.

If you are a citizen of Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, or the United Arab Emirates, you are only eligible for visa-free entry if you hold an ICAO-compliant ePassport (a passport with an embedded biometric microchip). If you show up to Haneda Airport with an older, non-biometric passport from one of these nations, immigration will deny you entry and place you on the next flight home.

What to Do (and What Not to Do) Before You Fly

To ensure you sail through customs and immigration without being pulled into a secondary screening room, follow these exact protocols.

What to Do:

  1. Register on Visit Japan Web. Do not wait until you land to fill out paper customs forms. Use the official Visit Japan Web portal up to two weeks before your flight to fill out your immigration and customs declarations. It generates a QR code that lets you use the fast-track automated kiosks.
  2. Book onward travel. Japanese immigration officers legally require proof that you will leave the country. You must have a confirmed return flight or an onward ticket to a third country ready to show on your phone.
  3. Check your passport expiration. Your passport must remain valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in Japan.

What Not to Do:

  • Do not attempt a “visa run.” While you can theoretically leave Japan for South Korea for a weekend and return to reset your 90-day stamp, immigration officers heavily scrutinize travelers who spend more than 180 total days in Japan within a single calendar year. You risk being denied re-entry.
  • Do not assume you can work remotely. Working remotely for a foreign employer while on a tourist visa operates in a legal gray area in Japan. If you mention to an immigration officer that you plan to “work from cafes,” they can deny your entry. Stick to the word “tourism.”

By confirming your passport type and securing your QR codes before you board, you can completely bypass the notorious immigration queues and start your Japanese vacation the moment you step off the plane.
